Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP): Maximizing Your CRS Score

A family celebrating approval

For applicants whose Express Entry score sits below the general cutoff (e.g., between 380 and 450 points), the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is the single most valuable strategy available. Secure a provincial nomination, and your Express Entry profile is awarded 600 points instantly, guaranteeing an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

Understanding the Two PNP Types

Provinces run two kinds of migration streams, both targeted toward local economic shortages:

  • Enhanced PNP: Linked directly with the Express Entry pool. The province scans the pool and issues a Notification of Interest (NOI) to select applicants.
  • Base PNP: Applications are made directly to the province. Upon nomination, processing occurs outside of Express Entry, requiring a separate federal check.

Provinces like Ontario (OINP), British Columbia (BCPNP), and Alberta (AAIP) frequently target specific occupational lists. Knowing which provinces require your profession is key to a successful visa pathway.
